Record Sessions

The Record tab transforms your device into a powerful meeting and conversation recorder. Capture meetings, interviews, lectures, and conversations with live transcription, AI-powered insights, and rich metadata—then review organized summaries, chapters, and action items afterward.

Accessing the Record Tab

The Record tab appears as the fourth item in the main tab bar (after Notes). Tap the microphone badge icon () in the top-right corner of any tab to quickly start a new recording session from anywhere in the app.

Starting a New Session

1. Open Session Setup

Tap Start New Session from the Record tab's empty state, or tap the mic badge icon () in the Record tab's toolbar.

2. Configure Your Session

Session Title

Enter a descriptive title to help identify the recording later (e.g., "Q3 Planning", "Product Interview - Sarah", "Standup - Sprint 12"). This title will appear in your session list and notes. If left blank, an AI-generated title will be applied after processing.

Session Template

Choose a template that matches your recording type. The template influences how AI analyzes your transcript and which insights are prioritized:

TemplateIconBest For
Freeform🎙General conversations, brainstorming
Sales Call💼Prospect and customer calls—extracts objections, commitments, and signals
Interview🎤Job interviews—highlights candidate responses, strengths, and concerns
1:1👥One-on-one meetings—feedback, blockers, decisions, and action items
StandupDaily standups—what was done, what's planned, blockers
Lecture📚Classes and presentations—key concepts, definitions, formulas

If you've granted calendar access, upcoming events from the next 7 days appear as selectable pills. Tap an event to link it to your session. After processing, the session detail view will indicate the linked event. Calendar linking helps you automatically associate recordings with scheduled meetings.

3. Start Recording

Tap Start Recording to begin. The app transitions to the live recording interface with:

  • Elapsed timer showing recording duration
  • Audio waveform visualizing microphone input
  • Pause/Resume button to temporarily stop recording
  • Bookmark button (flag icon) to flag important moments

Recording continues in the background—even when your phone is locked or other apps are in use.

During Recording

Pause and Resume

Tap the Pause button to temporarily halt recording (e.g., for a break or private aside). Tap Resume to continue. The elapsed timer stops during pause, and a visual indicator shows paused status.

Adding Bookmarks

Tap the Bookmark button () to flag the current moment. Bookmarks capture:

  • Timestamp (elapsed time when flagged)
  • Optional label (can be edited later in session details)

Use bookmarks to mark important decisions, questions to revisit, or standout moments. After processing, bookmarks appear as jump points in your session detail view.

Live Transcription

Transcription begins immediately and runs in real-time. Speaker detection identifies and labels different speakers throughout the conversation. While the full transcript is processed after recording ends, key phrases may appear during active recording.

Ending a Recording

Tap Stop to end the session. The app processes your recording:

  1. Transcription – Full audio converted to text
  2. AI Analysis – Applied based on your selected template
  3. Save – Session saved as a voice note in your Notes list

Processing happens automatically. Once complete, the session appears in your Record tab's past sessions list.

Viewing Past Sessions

The Record tab lists all your recorded sessions, sorted by most recent. Each session card shows:

  • Template badge (e.g., "Interview", "Sales Call")
  • Duration (formatted as minutes:seconds)
  • Title (or "Untitled Session" if none provided)
  • Relative timestamp (e.g., "2 hours ago", "Yesterday")
  • Word count
  • Bookmark count (if any)
  • AI summary preview (if available)

Session Card Actions

  • Tap to open the full session detail view
  • Swipe right → Pin/Unpin the session
  • Swipe left → Delete the session

Pinning Sessions

Pin important sessions to keep them at the top of your list. Pinned sessions remain accessible even after new recordings are added.

Session Detail View

Tap any past session to open its detail view. This is where AI-processed insights are organized and actionable.

Hero Card

The top card displays session metadata:

  • Template with icon and label
  • Duration and word count
  • Exact date and time of recording
  • Calendar event link (if linked)
  • Bookmark count

AI Summary

An AI-generated summary of the conversation, extracted based on your session template. For sales calls, this focuses on prospect sentiment and commitments; for interviews, it highlights candidate responses.

AI Highlights

Three key moments or statements extracted from the conversation. Each highlight is marked with a bullet point and represents a significant point in the discussion.

AI Chapters

The transcript segmented into timestamped chapters, each with:

  • Chapter title (e.g., "Introduction", "Pricing Discussion", "Q&A")
  • Start time (formatted as minutes:seconds)
  • Chapter summary (tap to expand)

Tap any chapter header to expand and read its summary. Chapters help you navigate long recordings without scrubbing through the full transcript.

AI Decisions

Decisions made during the session, extracted and listed with checkmark icons. Useful for capturing commitments, agreed-upon next steps, or resolved questions.

AI Action Items

Tasks or follow-ups identified in the conversation, displayed as checkbox-style items ready to be acted upon or transferred to a task manager.

Bookmarks

All flagged moments from the session, listed with:

  • Timestamp (tap to jump)
  • Label (if provided, otherwise "Bookmarked moment")

Bookmarks serve as quick references to important segments.

Follow-up Draft

An AI-generated email draft based on the session content, ready to copy and send. Tap Copy to copy the entire draft to your clipboard.

Transcript

The full transcription of the session. By default, the transcript shows the first three lines. Tap Expand to view the complete transcript. Tap Collapse to minimize it again.

Exporting and Sharing

From the session detail view, tap the Share icon () in the toolbar to export the session as text. The export includes:

  • Session header (template and date)
  • AI Summary
  • AI Highlights
  • AI Decisions
  • AI Action Items
  • Full Transcript

Share via Messages, Email, Notes, or any compatible app. The exported text is formatted for readability and easy reference.

Managing Session Templates

Session templates shape how AI analyzes your recording:

TemplateAI Focus
FreeformGeneral summary, key topics, decisions, action items
Sales CallProspect objections, commitments, next steps, buying signals
InterviewCandidate responses, strengths, concerns, standout moments
1:1Feedback given, blockers, decisions, action items with owners
StandupYesterday's work, today's plans, blockers per speaker
LectureKey concepts, definitions, formulas, important points

Choose the template that best matches your recording type for the most relevant AI insights.

Background Recording

Once recording begins, it continues even when:

  • Your iPhone is locked
  • You switch to another app
  • The screen turns off

This ensures you never miss important content during in-person meetings or phone calls. Return to the app to pause, resume, add bookmarks, or stop.

  • Notes – Recorded sessions are saved as voice notes, accessible from the Notes tab
  • Calendar – Sessions can be linked to calendar events for automatic association
  • Cloud AI – AI processing (summaries, chapters, highlights) runs via cloud services and requires Cloud AI credits (see Cloud AI) and requires an active subscription (Starter, Pro, or Ultimate)

Session Configuration

When starting a recording, SessionConfig holds:

FieldDefaultDescription
title""Optional session title; AI generates one if blank
template.freeformSession template from the 6 types above
calendarEventIdnilLinked EKEvent identifier, if any

Cloud Storage (NoteAttachments)

Processed recordings include attachments (audio files, exported transcripts) stored via Cloudflare R2 when cloud sync is active:

  • NoteAttachment records: r2Key, mimeType, sizeBytes, uploadedAt
  • The localURL field caches the file on-device for offline playback
  • Uploads run asynchronously after processing completes

This is separate from the note body itself — the transcript, AI summary, chapters, and highlights are stored in the note JSON; the raw audio and export file go to R2.

Tips

  • Pre-set your title before recording so it's immediately identifiable in notifications and your session list.
  • Use bookmarks liberally during recording—it's easier to review flagged moments than scrub through a long transcript.
  • Choose the right template for more targeted AI insights.
  • Link calendar events to automatically associate recordings with scheduled meetings.
  • Export after meetings to share notes with attendees or stakeholders.
